Problem with New Backup Job in FrontView

I have browsed every possible place, there are a couple of look-alike subjects on the forum but none gives a solution for the following problem:
"the source path is invalid. please check the path and make any necessary corrections"

I have Readynas Ultra 2.
When I want to "Add a new backup job"
I do simple browse function in the: STEP 1 - Select backup source
getting the following path from the FrontView Backup option:
i choose 'Share: media' from the drop-down menu, and then the following path appears:
/videos/downloads/complete/BLES00942 (Max Payne 3)

as a STEP 2 - Select backup destination
I choose Backup: USB HDD 1
getting the followign path:
/GAMEZ
when pressing apply I get the message:
"the source path is invalid. please check the path and make any necessary corrections"

Can anybody tell me what am I doing wrong, or what is wrong with the firmware as I have used this option couple of times before latest firmware upgrade. I am now on RAIDiator 4.2.22, and starting to familiarize with my Ultra 2.

Many thanks in advance.

    Superandrea,

Do you have the correct permissions on that folder? Have you tried a different folder?
  • Dear CaseyH,

thank you for your reply and question - What permissions should I have for this situation? I can access the folder from multiple sources (windows explorer, readynas remote, Raidar) but seems that only when files are accessed from Raidar I can do changes/delete some files. Does this affects also backup functions?

I have tried to backup some other folders on the same location/source (media), and it seems that they work/can be copied. And that confuses me even more.

Sorry if my questions sound blunt, but for me the whole network backup thing is still in early fase of learning...

Anyway, many thanks for your assistance and looking forward to any solution available !!!

    Superandrea,

    Try the following:
Under "Shares\Shares Listing\CIFS\Advanced Options" clicking the check box next to "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings. This option is useful in cases where you are changing security levels and need to workaround file access problems." then clicking Apply. This will reset the permissions on the folders and show allow you access to them again.
  • Hi CaseyH,

I have managed to find a kind of a solution for the problem - I am backing up the whole 'videos' folder to backup - it is a bit more time consuming, I admit. Now I have different problem. As I am backing up to my external hard drive(s), when I unplugged them and after use with my PS3 returned and reconnected to my Readynas Ultra 2 I cannot write anymore to these drives. If I go to Shares\Shares Listing\CIFS\Advanced Options I see the following:
    Share folder owner: root
    Share folder group: root

If I try to change it to nobody and nogroup, after pressing apply button it goes back to root/root.

Is this how should it be, or there's a bug in the software? Just maybe a remark one of the hard disks is USB 3.0 and connected to the front port (USB 3.0) and the other one is USB 2.0 and connected to one of the ports on the back.

And after creating backup job from Backup to Hard Disk I get error with the following log:

INCREMENTAL Backup started. Thu Nov 22 00:44:05 CET 2012

Backup failed. Thu Nov 22 00:44:05 CET 2012.

    Reason for failure:
Error encountered copying data from source path ==> /USB_HDD_3//GAMEZ due to unknown reason. Please see log.

Please share with me if you have any ideas how to backup to my hard disks again.

    Many thanks!!!
  • I'm having the same problems as noted by superandrea. So I logged in via SSH and attempted a backup using rsync. It copied a few files, then gave the following errors. I have no idea what they mean.

rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes to socket [sender]: Broken pipe (32)
rsync: write failed on "/USB/USB_HDD_4/Photos/DSCN1007.JPG": Input/output error (5)
rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at receiver.c(322) [receiver=3.0.9]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (2175 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(605) [sender=3.0.9]

Edit: Problem solved! I'm using a 2.5 HDD and I was powering it with a single USB cable. Once I plugged in the Y-cable to give it more power, everything works fine.
  • Thanks for your update xsspeed03, solution for your problem sounds fairly simple - I believe that with mine it goes over rights, which I cannot change in Frontview for some reason - so, CaseyH, I still count on your expertise and input!! ;-)

    Superandrea,

Your ReadyNAS isn't part of a domain right? I think your PS3 is setting the file permissions to root/root. You can use Shares\Shares Listing\CIFS\Advanced Options and set owner = nobody , group = nogroup and check the box for "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings. This option is useful in cases where you are changing security levels and need to workaround file access problems." This will reset the permissions back to full access. If that does not work enable FTP service and set Read/Write access for FTP service on the USB device then ftp to the ReadyNAS and use the chmod -R 777 USB-SHARE to set full access to that share.
  • Thank you Casey for your input - I will definitively try this at home ;-) It sounds logical, as both drives I use for my PS3. First option does not actually work - as when changing owner to nobody and nogroup - after pressing Apply button setting just goes back to root/root...

The only thing is that when these drives are plugged in any other PC I can access and read/write files without problem?

Will try and update thread once I figure out your second suggestion - I admit I am geek - but inverted one so no clue on FTP protocole (yet ;-)

    Superandrea,

Login to your ReadyNAS GUI via https://READYNAS-IPAddress/admin
    Click Services
    Click Standard File Protocols
Click the box next to FTP
Change Authentication Mode from Anonymous to User
Click Apply in the bottom right corner of the web page
    Click on Shares
    Click on Share Listings
Click on the paper icon under FTP for your USB share
    Change Default Access to Read/Write
Click apply bottom right of web page
Use an FTP program to connect to the ReadyNAS or from linux/os X command line (windows doesn't seem to allow me to change permissions from the command line)
    Login as a admin
You should now be able to see the files and reset permissions on them
