ready NAS 102 : impossible to update firmware & to save conf
Hello,
I've a readynas RN10200. It works perfectly, actually on firmware 6.1.5
I've no problem to acced to the NAS, I use Transmission for my torrent files (works perfectly) and I've opened ports on my netgear DG834 (80, 20, 21, 443, and another for transmission.)
PROBLEMS :
When I clic "update" to get the new firmware, a windows say "download" then, 7 second latter, the windos deasappear, and the download don't start.
I've download the new firmare, and tried to install it manually, I choose the file, it says "transfer... 0% ... 100%, then, nothing, the windows close.
I've tried with internet explorer and chrome, same issue...
SO, what can I do? (and each time I go to manage my NAS? I've the message "new firmware....install...." don't works...
Is there another port that I should open into my router?
Too, it"s impossible to make a save of my configuration. It take a long time, (on a new windows) then abord....
Sorry for my bad english (I'm french) and thanks for your answers!!

- vandermerweMasterDid you unzip the file before trying the manual update?
You do not need to open ports for OS6.
I think 443 is the port that OS6 uses, are you using it for transmission?
I would switch off transmission and try the firmware update again.
If that does not work, do an OS reinstall using the boot menu. This will not destroy data but it's adviseable to have a backup. - stryper777AspirantThanks for your answer,
FOr transmission, I use port 52000. I've tried to stop it, and install the update, same problem (automaticlly, and manually)
ANd yes, I've unzip the package before to try to do the update.
For the OS reinstall, using boot menu, whats is the method?
The problem is that, I can make a backup, cause it don't works too (I assume make a back-up it's to save the configuration, and that operation dont works...)
That's really strange, cause, I've this NAS since early december, and it seems to me that once, already, I done and update and it worked perfectly. Too, i've no problem to use transmission, to access to my files, etc, so it's really weird... - vandermerweMasterI would try an OS reinstall, here are the French instructions
http://kb.netgear.fr/app/answers/detail/a_id/24113
I think if you can't follow those then you should contact Netgear support, you can do this online or by phone as you have 90 days free telephonic support. Online is easy and they respond quite quickly.
An OS reinstall does not wipe your data. Make sure you do NOT do a factory default which would wipe your data
EDIT. I am trying to follow your other thread in French and I sense you are uncomfortable with the boot menu. Accessing the boot menu itself is not unusual, as long as you choose the right option it is safe.
The option you want is OS reinstall (Réinstallation du système d'exploitation)
You should always have a backup of your data. OS reinstall is very safe but it is recommended that you make a backup before doing it if you don't have one already. I'm sure jonjonoo will say something similar. - stryper777AspirantThanks U for the link. I will do that, but, first, I'm going to save my senstives data to be sure. So, if there's a problem in the process, I could at worst make a factory defaut, and re-install all.
Will keep U updated when it's done :) - vandermerweMasterThat is the right way to do it. I edited my previous post to emphasise the backup, perhaps you did not see it.
- stryper777AspirantHello, and thanks again. Just read your EDIT.
In fact, with your link, I feel very confortable to do it. I felt inconfortable, cause, when you told me about the boot menu, I searched , and found only the same page you gave to me, but for the readynas 104 (this one seems to have a screen that let U know when you are on boot mode) So, with your page, it's really clear (don't know what I did to miss it and arrive on the "wrong" 104 model page....)
I'm not a "professionnal" on NAS, but I built/mounted my computers (piece by piece), and totally installed them, so, I'm not a "newbit" in computers.
In about 1 hour, my data will be totally backup, so, I could make the OS Réinstall :)
ANyway, thanks a lot for your and, your explanations & kindness. Will let U know the result when I'll done it!!
Hoep it'll works well.
(I've tried all the after noom to do many manipulation like all restart (computer, NAS, Swtich, Router, etc...) tried to install some certificat to don't have the message "security risk" on my different navigators, and this evening, tried the jonjonoo solution with Firefox, without succes...
Not a big deal to not have the last update, BUT, really borring to have the message each time "new firmware blablabla" and always good to have new firmware from official NETGEAR when it's provided. - stryper777AspirantOk, can U believe that?
Waiting for the datas save, I "play" with my NAS, and test the Readycloud system.
All that bring me to the page :
https://readycloud.netgear.com
Here, I connect with my account, and saw my NAS (but, by this page, wich not using my local NAS IP adress) no message of security certificat problem.
ANd from this page, (https://readycloud.netgear.com), once logged, I can see the same icon of my NAS, (MANAGE MENU) and I click "update" and the downloading process begin.... And succefully install the firmware. Asked me to restart, and .... 6.1.6!!
SO, I assume, it's a security problem with my navigators, or perhaps with windows sevne (cause I saw on a forum, old, that someone had a similar problem, and he used an old PC with XP on it, and succefully did the firmware update)
SO, problem solved, and, seems, it's not a NAS problem, but a securtity problem caused by SEVEN + internet navigators.
I'm happy to have search on this way (I've tried this afternoon to find a way to add the certificate to stop my problem, without success, cause I've succeed to add the certificate, but still have the warning message when I connect with the IP NAS adress
STill have the problem to save my system - vandermerweMasterDo you know where the certificate store is in the browser. I would check that it was generate by the right IP address.
Also you can check in the https settings and make sure the IP address is the NAS IP address.
The NAS IP must also be in the trusted sites list ( browser security)
I know how to sort certificates out with internet explorer and doing it on ie seems to remove the certificate problem on chrome. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
That is because IE and Chrome both use the same certficate store (the standard Windows SSL store). FireFox uses its own certificate store.vandermerwe wrote: ...doing it on ie seems to remove the certificate problem on chrome.
From a user point of view, it is simpler to add a security exception to Firefox than IE and Chrome, as it can be done without worrying about certificates at all. - stryper777AspirantSo, I did it!!
My certificat, in the NAS parameter HTTPS was named nas-BF-2F-A7.local
I added yesterday afternoon on the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store, but that didn't worked...
In fact, I had to rename this certificat using that explanation
1. First, examine the certificate. (Left click on "Certificate Error" in address bar, and click "View Certificate".) If the certificates "Issued to:" and current IP is different, navigate FrontView/Services/Standard_FIle_protocol. Under "HTTPS" service, there is "Generate new key" button. Specify "SSL key host" match with your ReadyNAS' IP, and click "Generate" button. And exit IE7 (to flush cache), and connect to FrontView again.
2. Then install certificate into IE7. Left click on "Certificate Error" in address bar of IE7, and click "View Certificate". There is "Install Certificate.." button. Click this button to start "Certificate Import Wizard", so follow Wizard to install certificate.
Please note that Windows Vista works different than XP. When you are using Vista, you need to specify ReadyNAS as "Trusted Zone", otherwise you don't see "Install Certificate.." button when viewing certificate. And while walking through "Certificate Import Wizard", you need to click "Place all certificates in the following store" radio button, and specify "Trusted Root Certification Authorities". (If you place a certificate in your personal store, IE will not trust it.)
Now, my certificat is named 192.168.0.7 (my NAS local ip adress)
But when I tried to add the certificat with IE I couldn't add it on the good store (Trusted Root Certification Authorities store), so I've saved the certificat on my computer and used this way to put the certifcat on the good shoop :
Adding certificates to the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store for a local computer
Administrators is the minimum group membership required to complete this procedure.
To add certificates to the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store for a local computer
Click Start, click Start Search, type mmc, and then press ENTER.
On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
Under Available snap-ins, click Certificates, and then click Add.
Under This snap-in will always manage certificates for, click Computer account, and then click Next.
Click Local computer, and click Finish.
If you have no more snap-ins to add to the console, click OK.
In the console tree, double-click Certificates.
Right-click the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store.
Click Import to import the certificates and follow the steps in the Certificate Import Wizard.
Now, I've no message security warning either with chrome & ie :)
But I've tried to backup my NAS system (using this way) and still don't work (message The gateway did not receive a timely response from the upstream server or application)
But no matter, I dont need that :)
EDIT : backup done, it seems it was too long (I checked first time "ALL")
I did a system NAS backup but I dont checked "share access" (and checked all the other cases) and works perfectly.
