How to enable a trash folder on ReadyNAS Duo 2
I want to be able to set up a Trash bin on the ReadyNAS Duo that functions similarly to the Windows Recycle Bin (deleted items go into the bin until the trash is emptied). Although I've read posts on this functionality elsewhere in this form the information provided is years old and doesn't seem to apply to the current version of RAIDar 5.3.3.
At least I've been unable to locate the settings referred to in those posts, for instance I cannot find an recycle bin, nor does a path like "Share Name / Description / Password / Disk Used / Quota (MB) / CIFS / NFS / FTP/S / HTTP/S / Rsync / Delete" make sense to me.
Can anyone tell me where to find the settings to enable/disable a Trash/Recycle Bin functionality for ReadyNAS shares using RAIDar 5.3.3? And if so, can you advise if the setting for the entire drive or just for an individual share?

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you are comfortable with SSH (use of this is unsupported) then you can enable this for CIFS (i.e. Windows file sharing). I discussed this recently in this thread: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=342388#p342388. The Recycle Bin will only work over CIFS, not other protocols. There are no options for this in the new Dashboard UI found on the Duo v2, with the current firmware in RAIDiator 5.3.3. Hopefully they add this feature in a future firmware update.
Also RAIDiator (OS/firmware on the NAS) is very different to RAIDar (client software your run on your PC/Mac/Linux machine). - DAMAAspirantI have a Duo and Radiator 4.1.8 (and in Swedish, so the options might be named slightly different than what I have written below), but I guess it should be something like this.
1. Log in to the NAS Frontview.
2. Click Shares > Share list. This brings up a list of your shares.
3. Click the pen and paper icon under CIFS for the share you want to enable the recycle bin for.
4. Scroll down to Recycle Bin and select the checkbox Enable Recycle Bin. You can adjust the settings for when the files should be automatically deleted and the size limit.
5. Click Apply in the lower right corner.
6. Open Windows Explorer and go to the share that you enabled the recycle bin for. There should now be a folder called Recycle Bin, where the files you delete from the NAS will be moved.
You need to repeat the above for every share you want to enable the recycle bin for, it does not apply to all shares on the disk(s). Note that I personally had to reboot the computer I was doing this from for the recycle bin to appear. (Maybe it's enough to log out and in from the NAS, on the other hand the easiest way of doing that is probably to reboot :) ) - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDAMA you have the Duo v1. The v1 has a completely different web-interface and different options.
- DAMAAspirantThat's what I suspected, but at least a nice try :)
- NASNoob11AspirantCan I raise a question about the Recycle Bin logic of the DUO-v1?
I use this feature. I do understand the Time/Days metric. Please explain the File Size metric! I am clueless as to how to use this setting.
I do accept that the DUO does its' best to clean out the Recycle Bin via the setting I choose. Do these settings 'assume' that my DUO runs 24/7 hot?
I allow my drives to go to sleep after 2 hrs of inactivity. I suspect this 'nap' feature kinda-sorta interrupts my chosen Recycle Bin logic. Is this correct?
I do see that the Recycle Bin is eventually cleansed; but, mostly many days/weeks later............. :D - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThere is a cron script run daily: /etc/cron.daily/clean_recycle_bins
If the disks are spundown it waits until the disks spin up again and then runs within about 530 seconds. If files are too old by the setting you made in Frontview they are removed. If the recycle bin exceeds the limit older files are removed to get it back under the limit, I think.
If it's taking days/weeks for it to be cleaned I think something's wrong. - NASNoob11Aspirantmdgm,
Your share crisply de-mystified this. I do comprehend the 'files older than [n] days.' Can I suppose that the other, 'Limit recycle bin to: [n] MB' specifies some finite space amount to hold deleted files? Currently I use a 'size' of 10,000MB (10GB?) just because I have no single files this large. I believe that default value was 2000MB (2GB?). Hmm? I may reset the recycle bin for each Share.
Really appreciate your share. I do know that the RB logic is working, because after any/all contents are disposed of the RB icon disappears from the Shares file list. Interesting! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe Limit recycle bin to is the total space that can be filled by it. So if set to 10GB if the deleted files collectively exceed 10GB in size the NAS will take action.
Not sure whether it deletes everything in the recycle bin or not. I don't use this feature and can't remember checking this. - NASNoob11Aspirantmdgm,
Thanks again for the share. And apologies to DAMA for my apparent mini-hyjack of this thread. I perk up each time I see discussion about the recycle bin.
I have now reset my volume Shares to 2GB limits for the recycle bin and will monitor activity going forward.
I know this logic works because I do see files go away post deletion! Not certain about the 3-day period yet. Fun to watch!
I still have old stuff on the NAS to remove. :D - Hi there. Question along same thread.
I have the ReadyNas Duo, running Radiator 4.1.8.
I have enabled RECYCLE BIN under each of my SHARES (Backup, Downloads, Media). I have set 'Remove files older than : 20days' and 'Limit Recycle Bin to: 2000MB'
However, when I delete a file from within one of the Shares, I get a dialogue box telling me 'This item will be deleted immediately. You can’t undo this action. Cancel / Delete'. I hit DELETE. The file is deleted but does not appear in the relevant RECYCLE BIN folder.
Any ideas??
Many thanks
