How To Fix POWER ISSUE, ReadyNAS Duo V2 RND2000 - MUST READ!
First of all i request this topic be Pinned or sticky set so people can resolve this issue without the pain i have had to endure! - Thanks!
If you have this ReadyNAS Duo V2 RND2000 with the radiator Firmware 5.3.5 (or any of the above models with hard drives in) and you have had it for 24 hours to a few days and you cant get it to power on with the following symptoms....
when power plug is attached, you get a brief power LED for 3 seconds (ish) then it powers down to its Off State and remains off no matter what.
no activity whatsoever
resetting from back button does nothing at all
The likleyhood is that you have activated the auto power off function in the firmware which has a problem, after the NAS powers down useing the firmware "Power Timer" function the NAS will not power up ever again!
THIS NEXT PART WILL AID YOU IN FIXING THIS PROBLEM!
- WARNING -
THIS INVOLVES DE CONSTRUCTING THE NAS UNIT AND COULD VERY WELL VOID YOUR WARRANTY!
To fix this issue you have to remove the CR2032 battery that is fitted to the motherboard of the NAS
Start by striping off the side panels, Remove the rear panel with the fan attached to it, Remove the screws to the Upper panel (roof panel), remove the screws to the motherboard (main board mounted to the side of the NAS, then remove the Cell CR2032 Battery from the motherboard. give this a 3 min period before you re fit the battery and reverse the process)
THIS ISNT IT YET!!! - HOLD YOUR HORSES!
now you should be able to get your NAS to function! Woo! but the auto power off function is STILL ON!!
You must navigate to the IP of the NAS in your Browser and turn off "Enable Power Timer" function in the Settings section of the NAS Firmware settings page.
Once you have done this, you should be ok to carry on doing your work!
This has taken me some time to have this problem resolved with my own, and its only with time and repetition i have managed to sort out this problem myself.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf all else fails you could backup your data and do a factory reset (this should also update the BIOS).
Btw there is an old locked thread on this issue: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=60798
The recommended solution is to return the NAS via RMA for a refurb replacement or if only just purchased the unit via the reseller for a new unit.
If you are competent at removing the battery you should be fine but if you damage the unit in the process of attempting to remove and replace the battery it would void the warranty. - swalter0306AspirantFolks,
I can confirm this situation. I received my new Duo v2 middle of June, installed it right away and found it updating the firmware to 5.3.5 right away.
I configured the system to shutdown for the night hours and get back up before me in the morning. This worked flawlessly, until...
...one night a serious thunderstorm was approaching [it's an awful summer in Germany these days, I haven't seen the pool once this year :-( ] and I unplugged all of my electronic stuff like I usually do. So I was shocked to find the very next evening that the unit was bricked - no way of getting it back to life. I chose to DIY via battery removal and got it back up again.
Of course I avoided using the power schedule feature ever since - until recently I saw this thread. I went and checked my version and found
Netgear version: Uboot-1_1_4-NetgearDUOV3-V1006
So I did as mdgm proposed and installed 5.3.5 manually again, found the version increased to V1008 and now I am willing to try the power schedule again.
But, and this goes out to anyone responsible for implementing and testing the firmware, please:
I've been a really satisfied user of a Duo v1 for more than three years, as it just worked and did what I expected it to do.
But unless the ReadyNAS team is willing to burn its loyal customer base, please get a grip on things like this one above. I mean, what good is a firmware update if it is only happening in parts? In my opinion, this is a serious quality issue and you can't let the guys testing this stuff get away with it. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThis has been extensively tested. Once a newer firmware e.g. 5.3.6 is released the uboot would've been updated when you updated to that. Sometimes a few firmware updates are needed to update the uboot, one to prepare the system so that the uboot update can take place and another to do the update.
- swalter0306AspirantOK - I can understand that basically.
But the remaining question is: As an end user - how can I decide, if I have to repeat the firmware update? My previous understanding was, if I see 5.3.5 on the admin interface of my unit and I don't receive any error messages that 5.3.5 is installed completely. Not partly 5.3.5 and partly the previous firmware.
How can I tell if I have to repeat the firmware update? If I stumble across that fact weeks later, because something is just not working as it should, this leads simply to mistrust in the update process. I do not believe that this is the direction where NETGEAR is heading for?!?!
This is something that I'm just not used to from my past experience with ReadyNAS. And browsing some other threads I am currently not the only one dealing with these doubts... - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredGoing forward you would only need to install firmware updates once as usual.
In all aspects with the possible exception of the uboot update (which may/may not work from just the one update) installing 5.3.5 once would give you all the benefits of it. The OS on the flash is updated completely as is the OS on the disks. In my view it's highly unlikely that further uboot updates will be needed in the future for the Duo/NV+ v2 and if there are updates there shouldn't be major problems that stop the NAS from booting with not being on the latest. - kangarolfAspirantThis has happened to me as well and now I will have to return the item and get a replacement.
I updated the firmware as soon as I got the unit but it appears not to have updated 'completely', it is a daft state of affairs, you'd think there would be some warning on the dashboard like..you've just updated to .5 but due to the power on issue it is necessary to re-apply the firmware, otherwise no-one knows, I understand this is an area of the BIOS not normally updated but a warning is still necessary.
Annoying! Luckily I bought from Amazon so returns are a piece of cake.
Rolf - MisterRicoAspirantHello,
I have a ReadyNAS Duo v2 (RND2000-200EUS) since 07/07/2012 with Radiator Firmware v5.3.5 (this version was installed automatically when I have configured my NAS) and i have the bug of
"the auto power off function" (schedule): IMPOSSIBLE TO RESTART my ReadyNAS after. (I have to remove the battery)
https://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=64181&p=359905
Normally, this bug has to be solved with version v5.3.4, but after lot of search on internet, I see that lot of people have this bug on version 5.3.5 too.
I have seen a guy on a french forum of Netgear who says: "I have downgraded on version 5.3.4 and reinstalled version 5.3.5 and it is ok now". But I don't want to downgrade my NAS to test.
So conclusion:
Issue is solved if version 5.3.4 was installed before and continue for all new users like me (directly on version 5.3.5).
Please on the next version "5.3.6" (and all versions after) think to correct this bug like you do it on version 5.3.4.
Thank you
Eric - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredJust re-install 5.3.5 over the top of itself and you should get the updated u-boot
- MisterRicoAspirantThank you very much !!!!!!
I have reinstalled version 5.3.5
Before:
U-Boot 1.1.4 (Aug 1 2011 - 14:17:02) Marvell version: 3.4.27
Netgear version: Uboot-1_1_4-NetgearDUOV3-V1006 If U-Boot Endiannes is going to change (LE->BE or BE->LE), Then Env parameters should be overriden..
After:
U-Boot 1.1.4 (Feb 6 2012 - 14:40:46) Marvell version: 3.4.27
Netgear version: Uboot-1_1_4-NetgearDUOV3-V1008 If U-Boot Endiannes is going to change (LE->BE or BE->LE), Then Env parameters should be overriden..
I have not tested the schedule at this time but I think that it will be ok now !
:wavey: - tOmkiAspirantYesterday, I have this same problem (power timer- enabled), but with 5.3.6 firmware version.
xcube wrote: Symptoms:
1) After unplugging and replugging the power supply, It would turn on the Power button LED for Half a second and then it would shut down.
2) The fan did not spin
3) The Ethernet Orange LED would blink.
4) The Ethernet Green LED would not blink.
4) Pressing or Holding the power button would not do anything.
5) Holding the Reset button and the pressing the power button would not do anything.
