Naming convention for Folders and Files
Is it best to always use lowercase for naming folders and files on the ReadyNas.
Also is it best to avoid spaces and maybe use the underscore (_) or full stop (.) instead.
instead of my folder file name being
/c/media/Movies and Films/Science Fiction/War of the Worlds.avi
should I use
/c/media/movies_and_films/science_fiction/war_of_the_worlds.avi
I've starting using Plex and it does seem to be very fussy about the naming convention.

- sphardy1ApprenticeUpper or Lower case, spaces or not - it doesn't matter, the choice is yours
For Plex I follow 2 primary rules and rarely have issues with it detecting the media correctly
For Movies - each should go into its own folder, where the folder is the name of the movie. I find this practical anyway as my movies tend to have multiple external subtitle files, artwork etc & I'd rather than have all that stuff in a single folder rather than all movies & additional files in a single folder. eg:
/c/media/Movies/War of the Worlds/war of the worlds.avi
For TV shows - remember to include the Season/Episode info in the file name (eg S01E09), and place in a folder named after the Series. If you're a neat freak you can also add Season subfolders below the Series name eg for the show "sphardy" an episode might be found as:
/c/media/TV Shows/sphardy/Season 3/sphardy - S03E12 - episodename.avi
You can of course add further subfolders to the path for genres etc but tend not to as Plex supports sorting via metadata anyway - ok thanks for that.
I more or less had my folders/files named in that way anyway, but now I've modified them totally to comply with your suggestion.
I have a series of programmes called 'Magic Harbours'. There are only 6 in the series but unfortunately Plex has chosen the incorrect metadata and artwork. I've modified the metadata easily enough but cannot see how to change the artwork. I've obtained some suitable jpeg images I want to use for the background and folder but cannot see how I install these. I've tried to drag and drop but that doesn't work so any other suggestions would be welcome.
Cheers - sphardy1ApprenticePlex primarily used on online community database thetvdb.com to look up TV shows. As you will see from this link there is no entry for the show you mention, which would explain the mismatch:
http://thetvdb.com/?string=magic&search ... ion=Search
The *best* solution is for you to create a login @ thetvdb.com and add the show - that way everyone benefits and artwork & metadata will be picked up automatically - OK will do thanks for your help.
Cheers - I've modified the folder structure for my files and now run into a problem.
I've laid out my folders like you suggested which I read from Plex was the suggested way.
e.g.
/c/media/TV Shows/Lewis/Season 1/Lewis - S01E1 - episodename.avi
/c/media/TV Shows/Lewis/Season 2/Lewis - S02E1 - episodename.avi
/c/media/TV Shows/Lewis/Season 3/Lewis - S03E1 - episodename.avi
In the TV show section box I had the path to the folders as
/c/media/TV Shows/Lewis
Then when Plex scans the files it displays separately the folder names.
Season 1
Season 2
Season 3
These should be within a Lewis folder but they are not. Also because it's not looking for Lewis it doesn't display any programme data or artwork.
The problem cropped up when I sub-divided my folders into seasons.
Any thoughts.... - sphardy1ApprenticePath to enter in Plex is:
/c/media/TV Shows
By appending "Lewis" to the path Plex is seeing 3 shows called Season 1, Season 2 and Season 3
You do realise that you don't need one section per TV show in the Plex Library - right? - Hi again
Set my folders out as you suggested and now working ok. Thanks for your help.
By the way...
I have several hundred films in my movies folder and when searching the films with say Plex client on my iPad it takes ages to scroll through all the films. On the iPad client there is an option to view unwatched films. Do you know how I set a film as 'watched'.
Cheers - sphardy1ApprenticeCan't currently be done from iPad (without watching the film of course) as the iPad is only a consumer of the media - it doesn't allow you to modify the media in anyway. If you have a mac, the client there allows you to manipulate the library further, including setting watch/unwatched status.
Note that the iPad app does support search, and filtering by collection, genre, date, director etc - Hi
Everything is going great. My movieS and TV programmes are set out perfectly in flex and I can toggle between watched/unwatched using Plex on my iMac to show which movies I have watched.
I have one last problem....
I have a significant number of small video files on various subjects which I would like to include within Plex.
These are typically
/c/media/videos/diy/diy video files in this folder
/c/media/videos/sailing/sailing video files in this folder
/c/media/videos/guitar/guitar video files in this folder
At the moment I have used the movie scanner on each of folders so that on the main Plex menu I have
videos - diy
videos - sailing
videos - guitar
In total I must have about 30 separate entries in the main Plex menu which shows the folder names for the various files. Unfortunately this is rather messy when compared to the way Plex handles other series of programmes such as 'horn blower', 'lewis', 'V' etc
I have tried setting out the files using the following format
/c/media/videos/diy/season 1/diy - s01e01 - hanging a door part 1
/c/media/videos/diy/season 1/diy - s01e02 - hanging a door part 2
/c/media/videos/diy/season 1/diy - s01e03 - hanging a door part 3
/c/media/videos/diy/season 2/diy - s02e01 - fitting a shower Part 1
/c/media/videos/diy/season 2/diy - s02e02 - fitting a shower Part 2
/c/media/videos/diy/season 2/diy - s02e03 - fitting a shower Part 3
/c/media/videos/diy/season 3/diy - s03e01 - wiring a socket Part 1
/c/media/videos/diy/season 3/diy - s03e02 - wiring a socket Part 2
/c/media/videos/sailing/season 1/sailing - s01e01 - trimming sails
/c/media/videos/sailing/season 1/sailing - s01e02 - dropping anchor
/c/media/videos/sailing/season 1/sailing - s01e03 - navigation
/c/media/videos/guitar/season 1/guitar - s01e01 - tuning part 1
/c/media/videos/guitar/season 1/guitar - s01e02 - tuning part 2
/c/media/videos/guitar/season 1/guitar - s01e03 - tuning part 3
/c/media/videos/guitar/season 2/guitar - s02e01 - playing chords Part 1
/c/media/videos/guitar/season 2/guitar - s02e02 - playing chords Part 2
When I set out my folders in this manner and then use the TV series scanner within Plex it doesn't show the correct folder names and file names on the various menus. It simply states Season 1 or Episode 1 etc.
Is there any way I can set out my folders to show the correct structure of my files and also show the descriptive file name.
I hope this makes sense of what I'm trying to achieve.
Thank you
Phil - sphardy1ApprenticeWhen setting up a section in the library you can specify a "Personal Media" agent is used for scanning. This will pull data only from the video files rather than look up data from the Internet. I *think* this will give you what you want.
