Factory Reset Help
Hello, I'm new to this so please bear with me........I have been trying to update the firmware on my ReadyNAS Duo V2 from 5.3.7 to 5.3.8. I have tried to update it using the Dashboard but this did not work, so I tried to download the file and do it locally.....this did not work :x So I tried to use another computer....same process dashboard and then local but this didn't work either. So finally I brought it to work with me and tried it on our network here. In all instances before the dashboard was available and you could find the NAS with RAIDar. But now I'm not sure what has happened but you can see the NAS on RAIDar and it shows it there, it shows the IP address but you cannot connect to it. When dashboard comes up it always says device off line.
The operating systems I used and the browsers are:
Windows 7 - Firefox and internet explorer
Windows Vista - Firefox and internet explorer
Windows XP (SP3) - Firefox, Chrome and internet explorer
Windows 8 - Firefox, Chrome and internet explorer
I contacted support and they have told me to do a factory reset. I am worried that I will loose all my data on the NAS. As I said its a ReadyNAS Duo V2 with two 1Tb harddrives. It was set to RAID1. I guess my question is:
1) is doing a factory reset the only option?
2) if I do a factory reset will it wipe my data?
2a) if it will (factory reset) wipe my data, if I take one of the drives out and then do the reset and update to 5.3.8 firmware. Then put the harddrive back in (that I had taken out) will it copy the old data on to the drive that was in the NAS when I reset it? Will this data be available to view?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserDid you define a static IP address when you originally set it up? That would explain why you cannot connect on a different network.
A factory reset will destroy your data, so you should certainly do a backup first. Your work-around in 2a will not work.
You can probably get the duo to work on your current network by doing an OS reinstall from the front panel (not a reset). This will change the IP address to use DHCP and will also reset the admin password to "password". No data is lost (though it is always best to have a backup).
Alternatively, bring the NAS back home, and check that it runs ok on your home network. - vandermerweMasterYou could try an OS reinstall, I assumed support would have tried that with you already.
A factory reset will wipe any data on the disks in the unit.
Do you have a backup of your data?
The only way to backup your data will be to read one disk use Linux reader and copy data off it.
If the OS reinstall doesnt work and you need to factory reset, what you could do is remove the disks with the unit off, label them according to slot, then insert à spare disk.
Do the factory reset with the spare disk in.
Update the firmware if you can.
Power down the unit and remove the spare disk, reinsert the original disks.
Try to boot the unit
Option 2b will not work. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
I guess the theory here is that that NAS will update the firmware on its own when the original disks are inserted? Not sure that it will work when the straightforward methods fail, but it is conceivable.vandermerwe wrote: what you could do is remove the disks with the unit off, label them according to slot, then insert à spare disk.

I guess the first thing I'd do at this point is make a backup. That probably requires getting the NAS back to the home network (and if that fails, doing a traditional OS reinstall). - vandermerweMasterYes I agree that all my suggestion may achieve is an OS reinstall after the disks are reinstalled.
I thought that since he's been advised to factory default the unit he could achieve this without destroying his data.
Would support not have suggested this because they thought there was a problem with the software on the device rather than the disks? - PillNASAspirantThanks for the help so far. The support technician sent me another email yesterday saying that I should do a OS reinstall rather than a factory reset. So thank you for all of your information and I'm glad I waited and asked the forum for help otherwise my data would be gone now!
I'm going to try the OS reinstall later today and I'll let you know how I get on. But one more question I have is if I cannot get in to access the data whilst doing a OS reinstall will it be advisable to remove one of the drives before I do the reinstall in case it wipes my data? Will this help?
I told you I was new to all this ;) - vandermerweMasterThe OS reinstall will not destroy data and does not take very long - should be less than 10-15 minutes.
- PillNASAspirantThanks
Vandermerwe - PillNASAspirantHi I'm still stuck!!! :x
I've done the OS reinstall, but the device appears offline, even when I've connected it directly to my laptop. So I did the OS reinstall again and the device still appears off line. I can log in to dashboard but it says device off line. The you can get to the settings and I tried to do a firmware update but it says "Invalid update image".
Does anyone have any ideas please? - vandermerweMasterYou can log in to dashboard and change settings? Where is it saying device offline?
Can you access your shares now? - PillNASAspirantHi still cannot access the shares, haven't tried on readynas remote yet. but I get the device off line on the dashboard although RAIDar shows that it is there.
