RAX80 randomly disconnects LAN cable

During random times on my router drops connection to LAN cables. My PS4 says LAN cable disconnected and sometimes the same to my pc. It only happens for a few seconds. I tried different cables and also tried different ports. any ideas?

  • This is currently a bug in the 1.0.1.58 firmware that disconnect LAN randomly. I would downgrade the firmware to 1.0.1.40 for stability but if you want faster wi-fi speeds then use 1.0.1.56 but it has it's own set of issues.

Thanks, just wanted to make sure Netgear was aware of the problem.

Rax80 keeps randomly disconnecting LAN and cycles a disconnect through devices which causes a moment without wifi for one device as others are ok. Once it reconnects, another device disconnects randomly. Latest update from 9-2019
  • djust an update. its still a problem with the latest firmware

Still doing it even after a firmware downgrade. I’m beginning to get really frustrated. And to think I this thing cost 400$

So has anybody had any luck fixing this?  I am exeriencing something that seems to be related, I posted my own subject have have heard nothing on it.  All devices seem good.  Good speed and coverage.  But for online games that require a constant connection, I get booted out of the game.  My console is an ethernet connection but I think the problem is between the router and the modem.

When the modem is powered off, the router log will show something like

        Internet disconnected

        Time sychronized with NTP server

        Internet connected

But what I see in the router log is

[Time synchronized with NTP server] Sunday, Feb 09,2020 08:32:41
[Internet connected] IP address: 24.229.xxx.207, Sunday, Feb 09,2020 05:32:42

[Time synchronized with NTP server] Saturday, Feb 08,2020 22:02:16

Notice at 2:19:17, there was a time sync with no [Intenet connected].  This is what should always be in the log router, just the time sync event.  I think the [Intenet connected] implies that connection had dropped even though it was not logged?

Every time I get booted out of the game, I check the router log and it ALWAYS coincides with a [internet connected] event.

ISP looked at modem logs and said no issues there.  I still have my R8000 X6 but really don't want to reinstall it, as the RAX80 provides whole house coverage.  Never had this problem with X6.

I took the 2 year Geek Protection warranty from BB when I bought it, so returning it will not be a problem.

Before I do all of this, I just wanted to see if anybody had managed to get around these problems.

  • If you havent tried the following please do so

log on to router web interface

under wan or lan in the advanced settings, disable port scan.

also if you are having issues with multiple consoles, also in wan or lan, set nat filtering to “open” or “off.

  • Reposting so someone who is having issues with lan disconnecting can see if it helps...

The newest firmware that came out has not corrected this problem. Such a shame! I can’t even use the lan cable for my computer now either.

Yes tried this and it didn't work. My only workaround was to connect my console directly to my ISP's cable modem.

  • Same problem. Two wired PS4’s which disconnect randomly every other day or so.
Very dissppointed to learn that so many other customers face the same issue, and yet there is no answer from netgear.
My simple solution: I’ve put a cheap swich between my fiber modem and the router, bypassing the $400 router as far as wired connections goes. That seems to do the job. Not happy with the product and lack of service though :(

I'm using a similar workaround: I'm bypassing the $400 RAX80 router by using another router for my LAN connections. As it is, I'm using the RAX80 solely as a wifi access point that's connected to my router. The RAX80 currently isn't reliable as a LAN router. I wonder what NETGEAR is doing about this issue. It's indeed a big problem to have for a $400 router.

        they are doing nothing.

Just look how many issues there are & how long they have been open without any acceptance or feedback that there is a problem they are looking into.

eh, ALIEN has its own problems. I did same thing, switched to ALIEN few months ago, and never got speeds close to what netgear gets and im talking LAN connection not wireless. with net gear im pushing 700mbps, with ALIEN out of the box it capped at 550. Now after yesterdays firmware update it caps at 300. it got so low so while im support with ALIEN i plugged back in my nighthawk to see after months of not using it maybe they fixed this lan connection drop.. but they didn't.. had a few drops yesterday (same day as plugged in). so throwing money at the problem does not solve it, either $350 router and 1/2 speeds or $250 router and 3/4 speeds with random drops. awesome.

  • Hi,

Very disappointed with this disconnect issue, I am seeing it more after a recent upgrade to fix the issue of not being able to reserve more than 4 IP addresses. Wondering if I should downgrade to previous version.

I have seen issue more often also. Downgrading firmware is not an option for me since need to have security fixes in place due to working from home. Will have to tough it out as usual... have no faith in them fixing the problem since it has existed for over a year now with no real acknowledgment of the issue even existing even with reports from many users.

      • Is there even an older firmware version which doesn't have the ethernet LAN disconnections issue?

I'm now using the RAX80 solely as a wifi AP because of that issue. However, I bought it thinking that it would be my only router, with a reliable ethernet LAN. I didn't need an AP.

But you know what? My new main router (from tp-link) never disconnects anything from the internet. It is RELIABLE and all its features WORK. It also has great QoS performance (unlike the RAX80). And it was less expensive. I wish I could have returned the RAX80. But, I didn't notice the disconnections issue at first. When I noticed it it was already too late. So, I bought a tp-link router as a replacement (it's the archer 4000 and I highly recommend it.)

That being said, if there's a FM version with reliable ethernet, I'd really be interested to know. I'd love to wire my second desktop PC to the RAX80 (since it's physically really close to it). But as it is, I'm not going to connect a high performance gaming PC to an AP that periodically kicks me out of online games.
  • Hi all, I have same issue with my RAX75.

I have the same issue. My remote desktops from work get dosconnected every 90-120 mins.

      Nighthawk RAX75
      Firmware Version 1.0.3.102_1.0.48

Did you find any solution yet?

      • aant, there isn't a solution. Netgear doesn't seem to be doing anything about this issue. You have to find a reliable router, preferably from another brand.
  • I've constantly kept my firmware upgraded but I've been getting this issue more frequently. I have purchased new cat6 cables, changed all of the settings in this thread and changed ports on the router. I'm still dealing with this PS4 Lan Cable disconnected issue once or twice a day. It's a major issue for me because I do youtube and streaming so even a once second drop out in on online game is a BIG problem.

As far as I'm aware, there's no fix for this issue. The RAX80 simply isn't a reliable router for ethernet connections.

NeckGearNat  This has been going on for so long, I don't think Netgear will ever address it.  Just now I saw my work VOIP phone blink, then got a 'No Connection' on the display.  It took a few minutes then it reconnected with an IP assigned.  I was also streaming Xbox to my laptop while working and that got disconnected, too.  (I had connected XB to Ethernet a few days ago, which apparently was a mistake).  First thing I did was go to my router logs and there it is, proof that the RAX disconnected from modem:

[Internet connected] IP address: xx.xxx.xxx.xxx, Friday, Oct 23,2020 09:49:16
[Time synchronized with NTP server] Friday, Oct 23,2020 09:49:14

I keep this router because it provides whole house coverage and I paid so much for it, I hate to trash and shell out more $$ for something else.  But I am seriously considering another, if anybody can offer a substitute with good coverage.  NO mesh systems, though.  Have had nothing but trouble with those.

Sucks having paid so much for this router for it to be so unrelaible. Not sure what else to try outside of keeping my consoles on wifi.

  • I purchased this router only last week and had the same issue. I have a bunch of devices connected to it via LAN and noticed the disconnects almost immediately even with the latest firmware.

After some investigation, I disabled AX wireless under the Basic -> Wireless menu. This resolved the issue immediately.

Is Netgear ever going to fix this bug? Without AX enabled, I'm missing out the wifi 6 functionality.

Don't waste any time with any work around or "solutions", there are none.

Netgear has known about all of these issues for more than a year & has no attempt to fix them or even acknowledge there is a problem.

Return it & but something else.

Sorry but this isn't it. I've done this months ago and I still get at least 1-2 LAN disconnects a night. Being actively connected and streaming and producing content I know exactly when it does it. It's only for 5-10 seconds but it's enough to kill a stream and boot me from a game.

jmclarke   I did try this.  Also messed around changing MU-MIMO settings after reading other forum posts.  Nothing worked, still got disconnects from WAN.  I only noticed it initially because my XB1X would boot me from online game activities, but I started noticing it on my work supplied VOIP phone.  I think I never noticed it on the phone before because the company upgraded the phones and they now have bright LED screens that will light up with a message indicating no internet connection.  With the old phone, I wouldn't know unless the call dropped (which did happen but I never thought it was an issue on my end)>

I fixed it by finally getting a new router.  Last Thursday, I installed a ZenWifi AC.  Went with this mesh because we now require Ethernet ports in opposing areas of the house, and this system has LAN on main and satellite nodes.  So far the only issue I have with this is my client access sessions for work being terminated, which a coworker also had months ago after her ISP came out and swapped out their modem.  I'm sure it's just a matter of tweaking some router settings. It's the only thing affected, all other connections have been stable.

I went with AC over AX because I have also been reading that issues persist with many AX products due to the chipset.  With about 2 dozen devices connected, I don't see why any one of them need greater than 500Mb.  Even an Ethernet XB1X mostly downloads at max 230Mb since you're at the mercy of the download site, though speed tests show it maxes out around 733Mb.

If you have had stability for over a week now, it really makes me wonder if some of us got products from a 'bad batch'.

  • For those who may still have trouble with the RAX80, I exchanged it for a nighthawk rax70 and am happy to report I have gone about 3 or 4 months WITHOUT a single drop!!!! (I was getting maybe 3 to 10 a week of random disconnects)

I was hesitant to try another nighthawk but i really like the interface so I went for it and so far so good!!

    • The latest firmware MIGHT fix the issue with the RAX80. It did so for me but the reason it resets connections for other people might be different

Hi there, seems like some people are lucky and others not. I recently purchased a brand new RAX70 and have had the same strange issue ever since i got it and have had to keep contacting netgear support every week and currently still doing so. My rax70 seems to suddenly drop ethernet connection every couple of days. It seems to do it around 10pm and also my wife said it has also occurred overnight early hours in the morning. Wireless still seems to work with internet connection but its always lan that gets kickes out for couple of minutes or so then comes back. Netgear questioned my internet connection but it doesnt seem to be that, led light on modem is constantly lit the correct colour to indicate connection so no issue there. All leds on router still seem to be lit so no indication there is an issue when it happens. Keep checking router logs, nothing to indicate any disconnection from what i can see. So far with support, have changed mtu abd dns settings, then done a manual firmware reflash and complete reset of router and set up again, still having issue. Now they want me to take my netgear 8 port ethernet switch out as thats in between my wired devices and router but has always worked flawlessly with my old router so cant see it being an issue but will have to give it a try i suppise to take that out as a cause for the problem. This is starting to annoy me and driving me mad. No matter what i have tried it still keeps cutting out ethernet connection every couple of days. If yourself or anyone else has any ideas please get back to me. Will appreciate any info anyone can give to help.
