CAX80 can't upload 5GHZ

Im having serious issues trying to get this figured out, ive tried playing with everything for teh last 6 hours to get my uploads to work in 5ghz mode. Im literally 25 feet from the router and any file over 4MB just doesnt upload on sites like Wetransfer or Dropbox, icloud, email etc.

For example trying to upload a 19MB file will progess up to 40% on weTrafsnfer then suddenly drop down to 12% then shoot up to 75% and then down to 27% etc.

This DOES NOT happen in 2.4ghz mode where i can uplaod anything... help please!

Firmware version 5.1.1.2 is what everyone needs to push for to be released.

Does this happen with a different wifi PC or laptop?

Do wired ethernet connections work for the upload?

Use a browser? Which browser? Try a different browser as well.

How do you have the 5Ghz wifi configured?

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and 40 to 48 channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

    Is Smart Connect enabled?

Try enabling Beamforming and MIMO(MIMO may or may not be needed) and WMM. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

    Is Armor enabled?

What Firmware version is currently loaded?

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update? A complete pull of the power adapter for a period of time after the factory reset then walk thru the setup wizard and setup from scratch.

    • Does this happen with a different wifi PC or laptop? YES

Do wired ethernet connections work for the upload? YES

Use a browser? Which browser? Try a different browser as well. Tried Safari & Chrome, Both fail on 5GHZ.

How do you have the 5Ghz wifi configured? Stock Settings

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and 40 to 48 channel on 5Ghz. Tried, No luck.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many? A few, live in condo.

Is Smart Connect enabled? No, however when enabled, upload doesnt work.

Try enabling Beamforming and MIMO(MIMO may or may not be needed) and WMM. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings - already on.

Is Armor enabled? - no expired.

What Firmware version is currently loaded? latest, 2.1.2.6

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update? A complete pull of the power adapter for a period of time after the factory reset then walk thru the setup wizard and setup from scratch. - Done, 100x

"Is Smart Connect enabled? No, however when enabled, upload doesnt work." So 5Ghz upload works if you don't have Smart Connect enabled?

What channels are you using on 5Ghz and what channels are your nighbors using on 5Ghz?

What version of the firmware are you running on it?

If it updated firmware (automatically), have you ever tried a simple factory reset/reinstall?

  • 2.1.3.5 just became available for the CAX80. I just updated and it got me this far. I don't know if it will be helpful for your issue as 5GHz always worked for me.

    Something to try though...

Strange, i dont see that update?

Also, i bought a NEW CAX80, set it up and am habing the same issue..... on a NEW DEVICE.

SPENT 2 hours with Netgear support to no avail... in anycase maybe theres something wrong here in my cable connection?

Everything else on this router is bone STOCK, as in out of teh box fresh.

I didn't find it on Netgears support page.

I opened the routers setup web page, then Advanced/Administration/Router Update. I pressed the "Check" button, the router phoned home and found the update.

  • For the 5ghz network only, I'm having the same issue from my windows PC.  I cannot upload to wetransfer.com/onedrive sync  but I can do upload speed tests without visible issues.

I do not have this issue on my android phone using the same 5ghz network.

Disabling beamforming, MuMIMO, and AX does not resolve the issue.  But it does upload more data before erroring.

Typically, it stops uploading at the 1MB mark.

    Clean install of windows

    Lastest cax80 firmware

    No modem errors

Modem/computer have unobstructed line of site, about 20ft separation.

Does a wired connection exhibit the same thing?

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update?

      • Good luck.

Netgear support is trash. They didn’t hella me kept asking me to do the same BS resets every time. I still don’t have a solution and I bought 3 of the damn things to make sure it was a hardware issue. Seems to be a software one.

Comcast came to my place and replaced all the lines and confirmed all good. I will never buy another netgear product after they kept tying to sell me extended services after failing to solve this issue. If you can return it I suggest you do so.

Ok I put my CAX80 online in router mode today from Modem only mode.

        Updated FW to v2.1.3.5.

        1. I attempted to use the ERASE function on the CAX80 web page however after it rebooted, the LAN IP address had not changed back to 192.168.1.1. Hmmm.

I went ahead and setup the router and wifi SSID. Manual channel 11 and 40. Smart Connect, AX, MIMO, Beamforming and OFDMA enabled. Mixed WPA2 and WPA3 mode set. I powered OFF the modem for a good minute then back ON.

        2. I noticed that the higher 5Ghz channels are missing from the UI:

        3. Wired speed testing is good and to spec for my ISP services:

        4. Wireless on two different wifi client adapters is not to spec on the upload. Should be at 50Mbps. I'm not seeing that:

Connection rate on my ASUS in wifi bridge mode is good:

The ASUS has testing out on other routers and gets to spec speeds on the up so I know it's not the ASUS.

I connected a D-Link DWA-192 and got around 30Mbps on the uplink, still not 50Mbs.

I have RAX500 that i'll set up as a wifi client and test with the CAX80.

The low uplink speed maybe causing problems.

  • I wanted to keep this thread alive because I bought a Hardware version 1.00 back in 2021 and it was bricked last summer along with many of you (Xfinity & Netgear problem).  Netgear sent me a hardware version 1.01 replacement in August 2022.

Now, I am having this 5GHz upload issue too. Since August I was also confused why craigslist and nextdoor sale photos would not upload, google photos uploads were sluggish... All these same issues. Today I was trying to use MS Teams and sure enough, file upload over 1MB? Nope...

I checked my CAX80 admin page and the logs? Empty of any errors or warnings.

I thought maybe the firewall/NAT filter was triggering. Nope.

Maybe 5GHz connection was unstable? Nope, the network is crowded but not on DFS channels 😉

Maybe it was just my phone? Nope, happens on my Macbook Pro (Intel), my wife's Macbook Air, my Pixel 6 Pro, and my custom Win11 desktop.

Was this issue happening before August 2022 when I had the hardware version 1.00? Nope, and if I was it was so subtle I didn't notice.

Is this a Xfinity / Netgear issue? It sure as heck sounds like it. It was a Xfinity modem-side firmware update that bricked my CAX80 last summer ('22). Now only Xfinity CAX80 customers are also having upload issues? *sus* Xfinity... They want us to be just annoyed enough to pay for their monthly rental modem but avoid government watchdog scrutiny. Can anyone access the data inside the modem-side firmware? I bet something is a 0 that should be a 1 but they don't care enough to fix it.

Could this possibly be a DFS issue? Have we all settled on blaming Xfinity? It seems to be the only constant.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?

Are the uploads stopping or stalling or just going really slow?

      What channels are you using?

      Smart connect enabled or disabled?

Is Armor, SPC or Traffic Meter enabled?

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update? A complete pull of the power adapters for a period of time after the factory reset then walk thru the setup wizard and setup from scratch. Recommend setting the default DHCP IP address pool range to the following after applying and a factory reset: 192.168.#.100 to 192.168.#.200.

Are the uploads stopping or stalling or just going really slow? Usually they just fail. I found with the Craigslist app I could spam retry on each photo and eventually get it to work after 5-10 retries.

I don't remember if I have done the full reset since v2.1.5.2 but really? Is this necessary after every time we update the fw? This is getting kinda old... I can try setting DHCP all in the 100s. That sounds weird but hey, whatever works. I will try it.

Looking at the history of this issue, I can't believe it's been about 1.5 years since this was first reported and there's still no resolution to this. For the kind of money Netgear is charging for this piece of junk, I'm surprised there's no class action lawsuit in place on this!!

        1) What Firmware version is currently loaded?

        - 2.1.5.2; we have also tried to downgrade to older versions and that made no difference. I am not back on 2.1.5.2

        2) What 5Ghz devices do you have connected when this happens? Brand and model of any wifi adapters being used please.

        - Microsoft Surface Studio

        - HP x360 Laptop

        - Samsung Galaxy S22 Phone

        - iPhone Xs Max (not currently used regularly)

        - Nvidia Shield

        - LG C1 TV

        - Xbox One (not currently used regularly)

        - Sony PS 4 (not currently used regularly)

    • Yep... I have heard people with different ISPs have completely different experiences. Mine (Xfinity) is one of the bad ones. At least we have a workaround 🤷 On my windows 11 desktop PC w wifi 6 the connection doesn't give me any issues. But Netgear knows they got us over a barrel... I just hold my breath with every new firmware.

This was the brilliant response from a Netgear support "expert" on this issue. Instead of doing research and even checking these forums, or reviewing my call logs or support history, he tries to sell me advanced support options and asks me what's been done to date - when all that is in my logs.

It may have taken so many years, but I think I finally figured out.

Check to make sure that any devices that are having this upload issue, don't have their network settings set to use MAC Randomization.

If you turn that off on any of your devices having the problem, does that make it work properly again?

  • Hey gang- if you want to get this 5G issue resolved sooner than later you need to be calling support.

I'm on the phone with them now for a parallel issue related to the Android Nighthawk Application not working ever since they gave me the 5.1.1.2 firmware upgrade.

Despite me telling them that there's 100s of people in the forum complaining about 5G it seems that they aren't really looking to taking it seriously because his response was that competitors might be coming in and leaving negative comments as well.

My suggestion to you guys is that you get on the phone and report the issue and if it gives you any assistance, you can refer them to an older ticket of mine that has ALL the details of their debugging and resolution: Ticket 47070779.

All the debugging and even the link to the 5.1.1.2 firmware via their internal salesforce will be in that ticket.

    Good luck

I doubt this is the case nor think the rep is giving correct info. Competitors would not be involved here.

NG is taking this seriously and has been working on it. I can verify as well that this beta does solve this. It takes time to finalize issues and include any other fixes that maybe in play as well. FW isn't fixed for one issue then sent out. Other testing and development happens.

So ya if you need 5Ghz fixed, reach out to NG support and ask about it. Until FW is finalized then released, user will need be patient. Will keep on this. I've asked NG to consider posting a beta test opportunity as well before they release anything to help give some of us users a chance to try and see if there is anything else that needs fixing before releasing. As we have seen in the past year that new released FW was resulted in bad experiences. Hoping we can help NG avoid this on next release.

  • I am also having several issues related to the inability to upload files of any significant size over a 5GHz WiFi connection. I am reasonably certain my issues are caused by this WiFi glitch. I am running FW 2.1.5.2. My provider is Comcast and my connection is 1Gb. Connection status is all-good.

Based on advice given in this thread I just finished a very frustrating call with Netgear support. I was told that 2.1.5.2 is the latest firmware and there is no beta or later version.

I appreciate the attention this issue is getting and the documentation on this forum.

What do I need to do to obtain a copy of this beta firmware. Netgear has been no help.
