ReadyNAS Duo v2 won't boot with disk light continuously blinking
Long story short, there was a power outage a couple of weeks ago, and I have to manually press the ReadyNAS power button when the power came back on. I got the email notification about improper shutdown, as I have many times before. But I never saw the shares on the network. Couldn't access the admin page. Can't see it on the network DHCP table. RAIDiator can't find it.
The power button would not shut it down, so I had to pull the plug, plug it back in and press the power button. I have tried holding it for 5 seconds and other boot options but the disk lights never blinked and it just tries to boot up normally. It shows up in RAIDiator and I can sometimes get to the admin page, but after a while it becomes inaccessible.
I also received email messages about doing a SATA reset and a resync needed to happen.
I pulled the second drive out and booted it up with one drive. It booted up successfully and complained it was missing a drive of course. So I shut down, put the drive back in, powered up, and the admin page said it had to resync and it would take a while. The disk 1 light is on, but the disk 2 light is blinking continuously. It's been like this for 5 days now! RAIDiator can't find it.
I haven't done the OS reinstall with the reset switch on the back yet. I'm hoping that will fix it after I try rebooting again. But I'm spending a lot of time just pulling the plug and rebooting, I dont know what I'm doing :-( Any help on troubleshooting this without losing all my data would be appreciated.

I just hard-booted it again and it came up in RAIDiator. It started syncing, but then gave up telling me my 2nd drive was dead! Then I was able to go into frontview and do a graceful reboot. It started syncing and it seemed to be chugging along so I left it alone for a while. When I came back to check it, frontview said that it had gotten up to 2% syncing, but the ReadyNAS has disappeared from the network again with the 2nd drive light blinking continuously. Now what? :-(

Hi simon0117,
Do you remember the type of RAID was it configured to?
Would be best if you would consider calling support as well for your case.
Regards,
- Xraid. I don't think I can call support, this duo is very old.

Are you sure you have a duo v2? The labels are confusing, and many v1 owners mistakenly think they have a v2. Read this guide before replying: http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how-to-tell-whether-i-have-a-duo-v1-or-duo-v2-or-nv-v1-or-nv-v2/
Do you see one of the blinking led patterns below?
LED blink behavior for 2 disk systems is three quick blinks of all disk LEDs and the backup LED, followed by an 1s delay, followed by a number of slow blinks. The number of slow blinks will be the error code.
Current error codes:
1 - Vendor mismatch
2 - No disks detected
3 - Bad contents on root partition of disks
4 - Flash error
5 - Unsupported RAID configurationThough from your description it sounds like one of the drives has failed. Try powering down, removing disk 2 again, and then restarting. Then download the log zip from the web ui and look at the SMART status for the disks. You might also test both disks with vendor diags in a Windos PC (lifeguard for western digital, seatools for seagate).
- My mistake, it is a duo v1. The disk 2 light blinks continuously, nothing to count. I don't have access to a PC anymore, just a MacBook. I'll try getting the smart status like you said.
I pulled out disk 2 and rebooted, but Frontview says it's dead so I can't get any information. Would it be OK to try putting the second disk into the disk 1 slot and see what happens?

I'd try downloading the logs first, and see if you can find history in smart_history.log
You can power down, remove disk 1, and then try inserting disk 2 into slot 1 - to see what happens. If it fails to boot, you could try doing a factory reset from the boot menu (see 15-16 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RND2110/Duov1_NV+v1_HW_en_06Dec11.pdf)
If the system won't boot (and won't do a factory install) then disk 2 likely has failed.
Make sure you power down before replacing disk 1.
- Before the factory reset it would startup loud but then quieted down after it booted up. Now it doesn't stop and I have no idea how to figure out why. I think 4411 RPM is rather high isn't it?
Maybe when I was removing and inserting the drives I blew into the case several times to blow the dust out. Is there some sort of sensor that regulates the fan speed?- SandsharkSensei - Experienced User
I'm surprised you can even access Frontview. Usually, when the fans fail to quiet at start-up, it means the system did not fully boot. It certainly sounds like some process is not running properly unless the fan controller just coincidently went out when you did the default -- and in a way where the fan is at full speeed, not zero.
If it was doing this before you restored your data, it would have been best to try and figure it out then. It may need another factory default. I'd certainly try an OS install.
- The os install isn't going to erase my disks and configuration is it? It took me 5 days to restore my data :-(

I presume you're talking about an "OS Reinstall", so you can read info about it here: https://kb.netgear.com/20898/ReadyNAS-ReadyDATA-Boot-Menu

Yes, Sandshark meant to type OS reinstall.
It will reset the IP address to use DHCP and also the admin password to the factory default (netgear1 in your case). It should not destroy your data. If you follow the instructiions in jak0lantash's link, then keep in mind that you have a v1, and not a v2
The OS reinstall is a bit of a long-shot, but it might do the trick. Let us know.
