XR500 drops internet
I am having an issue where the internet stops working..... I have 2 Xbox ones being used and they randomly disconnect and now the wifi doesn't work either. The wifi is connected but no internet. One xbox is hard wired. I have to reboot the router multiple times to get everything back online. I am using the cm1000 modem and also the x4s mesh extender on my network.
The firmware has now been publicly released: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-Pro-Gaming-Routers/New-Firmware-for-XR500-2-3-2-32-fixes-disconnection-issue/m-p/1636839#M3864
If you are having a disconnection issue, please upgrade to this firmware (or a later one in the future). Thank you everyone for your patience

- MossbergTutorPlease PM me this beta firmware. I updated the firmware and it’s gotten much worse. It was okay when I first bought it...approx 3months ago. I had to reset it once every 2 weeks or so.
Now I’m resetting it everyday. My home cameras are always out when I most need it due y this router. It’s miserable.
Please help.- ngearftardLuminary
Mossberg :
Recently installed a home camera and was woken up at 1:30 AM due to a loss of video alarm. I have the camera set to record continuously, but when I checked Device Manager in the XR500's firmware UI after logging into the router immediately following the alarm, it indicated the camera was offline. Based on what I've seen in the XR500 System Information Logs, the router appears to be undergoing DHCP lease renewals at fixed intervals (24 hours?), whereupon the camera lease is not renewed (maybe due to the camera not accepting a refreshed/different IP address upon renewal, or otherwise getting confused?). The system info log was filled with DHCP lease renewal events immediately preceding the loss of video alarm; however, the camera lease was not renewed, unlike every other pre-alarm-connected device.
Other routers I've worked with had a UI option to extend the DHCP lease time, but I can see no such option in the XR500's UI. Hopefully a firmware fix is in the works as this is a helpful feature. In the meantime, I've assigned the camera's MAC a reserved IP address near the top of the allowed range via Settings -> Lan Setup -> Address Reservation as well as upping the amount of time it takes for an alarm to trigger, per the camera's software settings, to give the lease time to renew without alarm. Will post back here if this does, or does not, work.

I'll send you the hotfix firmware now.
- Billybudz420ApprenticeI was constantly losing connection with my xbox one X and my home security. I have 6 cameras... those are 5 nest and a ringdoora bell. I fixes the drop outs by manually assigning a Ip address to each device. Has been bout 4 days now with out any drop.

^ Yeah only takes a few minutes once you know what to do.

quick update, after a few hours, and to many to count reboots of router and modem, I unplugged the xbox one ethernet cable, rebooted everything it I have internet again..Not sure if this is what the cause is though, but im leaving it unplugged for now to see.
- JonQwestAspirantLooks like the drops have come back. I'm on V2.3.2.32 and both wired and wifi dropped out completely. Is there a beta FW that I can try?

Hi everyone - sorry to hear you are experiencing dropouts. I wanted to just repost some known problems/fixes as this thread is quite long now so could be lost:
- NETGEAR have made a hotfix firmware that fixes one cause for dropouts - either ourselves or NETGEAR can private message you the firmware
- There is a known issue with Xbox One when Instant Mode is enabled. This effects a very small % of users, but can cause you to lose ethernet connection to your Xbox when you restart. NETGEAR are looking into a fix for this. The workaround is to disable Instant Mode on your Xbox
If you have installed the hotfix firmware and you have disabled Instant Mode on your Xbox One (or you do not own an Xbox One then please post here with as much information as possible about your dropouts. One thing to always check is whether it's the router that's the cause or if your entire Internet has gone down. Simplest way to do this is to connect to your Internet Provider's modem after a dropout and see if you can get Internet through it.
JonQwest - I'll PM you the hotfix firmware now.
- Can you pm the hotfix for me as well.
- Lukaboii88AspirantCould I please get the hot fix firmware too ? Thank you in advance.

No problem - I will PM you all now.

Thank you dear, I will upload it and test it thoroughly then will provide you all some feedback. by the way, I have recently updated the router as it said update available. I updated it and its performing good than before but the wired connection is still having trouble. let's see this firmware will work or not. Thanks for your continuous support guys.

I need the hot fix too please. Constant dropouts from DHCP renewal.

I am still getting DHCP renewal changes every 10 minutes or so with dropouts with the hotfix.

I had an IT company double check all my settings. SAME FIRGGIN PROBLEM. Drop Internet to Wireless and Wireless devices. Taking this piece of crap back to the store. What a waste of time.
- Netduma-FraserNetDuma PartnerRick it's hard to keep track but have you tried any of the workarounds that have worked for people/are you using beta firmware?
- rickvidallonAspirant
I called an IT professional who double checked my settings for IP conflicts and DCPH ranges. Short of reboots, spit, duck tape and rubber bands; what would you like me to try?
- rickvidallonAspirant
I went out and bought a x10. I figured if I throew more money at the problem it might help.
Got home and could not connect LAN or WAN. Nothing.... Crap, crap, crap. After 3 hours I found an old post where someone had did the following.
1. Reset the router. (paper clip in slot)
2. Reboot router
3. Under security turned-off one bandwidth for WPA (takes a while.. go grab a beer)
4. Reboot again
5. Everything connected.
6. Restore WPA security.
7. LAN and WAN working now ( more shall be revealed; fingers crossed) - prbugzdaman7Initiate
Let me start out by saying man oh man am I disappointed in Netgear. I've owned several Netgear products throught my lifetime in networking, but the XR500 is by far my most frustrating device I have purchased to this day. I purchased the XR500 because of the new features, hardware, and OS. I've had the router for almost a year but have constant issues with WiFi. Just to give you a background on my home network I have Verizon Fios gigabit. I have a direct Cat 6E cable coming from the Verixon Fios Node on the side of my home into the XR500 WAN port with my home PC wired directclty into one of the ports on the back of the XR500. I've had nothing but issues with the WiFi ever since I set up the XR500. I've been following this thread for a while now and have ran into the same issues as most of the users on this thread. I've tried all of the work arounds and fixes, but I'm still running into the issue with my WiFi. Prior to purchasing the XR500 I had the R7000. Never had any WiFi issues with my R7000. Mind you I've used the 5G and the 2.4G connections in my home when I had the XR7000. Both frequencies on the XR500 keep droping and loosing connection to the Internet. Not sure what's going on here, but it definitely seems to be software related issues that doen't seem to be playing nice with the hardware. I don't have any definitive reasoning pointing it to be software related, but base on all the issues in the 31 pages of reply's, it points to the software. I have since purchased Googles WiFi mesh system and will be implementing this over the weekend. I'll post an update once I have it set up and working. But man am I disappointed in Netgear.
- Netduma-FraserNetDuma PartnerSorry to hear that prbugzdaman7, all I can say is the very best teams are on it, Netgear and Xbox and others. They're not taking the issue lightly and I hope they'll be a resolution soon.

This was first reported in May 2018. Its February 2019! Unacceptable! How about Netgear refund all those that bought the XR500. It’s been nine months and no resolution the problem. But, instead of addressing the issues, Netgear releases the XR700! 🤦♂️
I, myself, have not experienced ANY of the issues described in this thread. I currently have only one peripheral connected to the back of the XR500: The Netgear Nighthawk S8000 Gaming and Streaming Switch.
I have NO XR500 internet drops. My Xbox One X is set to INSTANT ON and I’ve never had any issues with it losing connection to the internet (connected via Ethernet to the back of the S8000).
My suggestion. Connect nothing to the back of the XR500 except a switch. Connect all Ethernet connected devices to the back if the switch. It’s working for me. 😁
