  • Anyone have any success?

Mine freezes when I attempt a time machine back up.

    Anyone have that problem?

    I'm running the latest firmware.

I certainly have this problem. Systematically, when I run a back up job (on the front USB), the NAS freezes.

I run 6.4.0 as 6.4.1 simply slowed down the unit to a virtual halt.

Yet all the other parameters seem to be ok....

In 6.2.5, my back up jobs were running like a charm.

I think the OS is simply not up to par and it does not seem that Netgear has an intent to fix. These problems have been dragging on for a long time now.

I am at a loss. With a non-negligible number of users, I think we'll have to move to a more robuts hardware/software combination. This level of performance is simply not acceptable.

My steps to cure the problem of the freeze is to do a factory reset which will lose all the current data so you need to backup first. My RN 104 has worked perfectly since I did that. I also stopped running the Virus scanner, but I'm not sure that makes any difference.

The current OS version is simply incompatible with the way the disk was formated by the earlier version.

  • Thanks for replying. Yes, 6.4.1 did not work at all for us, as we had antivirus turned on.

I don't think I'll be allowed to go to a beta version.

Any leads as to why the NAS is freezing up regularly? Only 18% of the disk capacity is being used....

Hard to say, though Netgear might be able to sort it out if they had the logs.  Hopefully they'll ask :smileyhappy:

There are a couple of fixes in 6.4.1 and 6.4.2 beta that might be related.

-Fixes potential network buffer overrun with heavy traffic on RN102/104/2120.
-Fix potential hang due to a race condition when using the CPU's RAID5 offload engine. (RN104)

        Hi,

I posted here, rather than start a new thread, as it's the same FW being used.

I have an RN102, it's been running fine since I bought it in Oct 2015. On Jan 11 2016 it started going off-line/freezing, only way to get back is power off by removing the plug.

I updated to 6.4.0 when I first bought it, have tried 6.4.1 (Jan 11) & 6.4.2 T72 (Jan 13) since problems started, no better.

I just disabled "disk spin-down" to see if that's a problem.

I have no apps installed, no anti-virus running, using SMB, NFS, HTTP, HTTPS, uPnP, & SSL.

        It has 1 x 3Tb JBOD and 1x 2Tb JBOD.

Emailed the lastest logs to mdgm.

        Thanks,

  • RN 104000 is started freezing up 5 or 6 days ago. It started with once a day, it is now twice a day. Can't access it through any means. It does respond to the pressing the power button three times and shuts down. On restart, everything is fine.

Checked the logs : no indication of anything. Disk spin down and timer option were never selected, so that's not the issue.

The only flag in the logs is the fact that the back up job did not successfully execute (because I did not have an external storage unit attached).

    Any idea what's happening?

I went back to 6.4.0. from 6.4.1 maybe a month ago, shortly after installing it, as it essentially paralized the NAS.

I would welcome any and all suggestions!

    Thank you.

Maybe try 6.4.2-T72.  There is a fix targetted specifically at RN104 raid stability.

  • Yes since I did my factory reset, I asked their tech support to remote back in and confirm that the node size issue was resolved. They said it had. I haven't had a lock up since.

Make sure you upgrade to the latest firmware THEN do the factory reset.

      Latest update:

I have now installed the very latest beta software, done the factory reset and I am now copying data back to the readyNAS. Seems to be stable so far with no drop outs. It might be a bit slow but at least it works. It will take a few days to complete the restore as I'm doing it a bit at a time and checking each step.

Note there are some fixes in 6.4.2 beta that may also help if your lockups on your 104 started on 6.4.1. See https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Beta-Release/ReadyNASOS-6-4-2-T72-Beta-2/td-p/999457/jump-to/first-unread-message

Also note that there is currently a known performance issue with anti-virus enabled on 6.4.1+

Particularly if a volume is quite full, the larger node size from a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) on 6.1.5+ can be quite beneficial on the 104.

Thank you for the great replies and pointing me in the right direction.... I will go buy a few disks and proceed with replacing the existing ones and verify that indeed they have started to fail, all while monitoring the release of 6.4.2 ....:-)

  • Anyone still having problems even with the new update 6.4.1?

I am. I don't know what to do. It's so unreliable. I'm afraid to keep storing my photos on there.

If you don't have a backup, I'd suggest trying to make one.

A factory reset is one thing to try, there is evidence from a couple of posters that it can help.  Someone just posted that they had a RAID volume created back on 6.1.5 firmware, and that a factory reset solved it (Netgear did make some adjustments to their BTRFS filesystem configuration back then).

Tech support believed the problem was due to the 'node size'. and the factory reset would fix this. I've messaged them back and asked them to confirm that now i have formated that the 'node size' issue is now fixed. They have asked me to send logs (which I just did)

Ive been going through tech support. and what they told me was the problem was related to NODE SIZE issue. The problem stems from my RAID been created back with an old firmware version 6.1.5.

According to them the only way to fix it was to wipe the entire volume and recreate it with the latest firmware. I've just finished doing that and im currently copying everything back on my NAS. And I have had any lock ups since.

        Interesting, thanks for sharing.

Netgear did recommend a factory reset back then to get best performance.  But it was a suggestion - obviously they didn't expect lockups later on.

  • Hi, I am having the same problem.

Everytime I copy over a file it crashes/freezes on 6.4.

I then have to unplug NAS and as soon as it starts back up it starts a resync.

I can then copy over all the files I want while it resyncs, but after it finishes it resyncing and I copy over a new file it crashes yet again.

Been going on since the upgrade to 6.4

    Please advise.

Mine froze again. I'm not sure if it happened when I was copying a file or just randomly.

Im almost 99.99% sure it has to do with this new 6.4.

I have 4 4TB discs in the the NAS. All the same brand/model.

EVERYTIME I copy it now crashes. When I unplug/replug it starts to resync. During this "resync period" which takes about 3 days I can copy over any file with no problem.

As soon as its resynced and I attempt to copy over a File it crashes and I have to do the whole 3 day process again.

I checked the discs and they all show no errors.

I have the same issue. I am using iSCSI for a backup exec v10 on W2008 connection as the software does not like mapped drives. I have now disable every feature on the RN 104 from cloud connections, snapshots, all apps, to ups and even any schedule jobs (scrub and defrag) and I changed the network connection to active backup. So far it seems to be working for a 3-4 days so far without issue.Check your logs to see if anything is scheduled to run.

Please keep me posted if you find out anything? BTW I tried the previous older 2 firmware versions and had the same issue. I have just started to download the logs and I'm going to watch for memory issues as per this link http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/hardware/is_there_a_way_i_can_verify_if_my_memory_is_good.

    Hi NetworkMechanic,

    Welcome to the community!

Is there an external USB plugged in to your NAS? I also suggest to check if both disk spin down and power timer feature are enabled, have them disabled and see if the freezing behavior continues.

    Kind regards,

      Thank you!

No, I don't have a usb device plugged in. I did have the power timer and the disk spin down enabled. I have disabled them now.

I'll reply in a few days to see if the RN is freezing.

      Thank you for the reply.
