OS 6.4.1 slow ... to the point of unusable
We just upgraded an RN102 to 6.4.1, which intially seemed to fix some backup issues we'd been working around, however we've just downgraded to 6.4.0 after seeing 6.4.1 being too slow to be usable (the downgrade fixed this issue). By slow I mean in navigating file trees and serving files. Has anyone seen this?
To get the fix for the anti-virus issue you can update to ReadyNASOS 6.5.0-T338 (Beta 2) (or later). Alternatively if you prefer you can stay on 6.4.2 for now and install the hot-fix (which is now available).
Thanks for your patience.

Hi JimG1,
Welcome to the community!
I haven't experienced this problem after updating the device Firmware to 6.4.1. Did you check if there's a service or maintenance ongoing while you are navigating the files? Was the same behavior experienced after rebooting the device or shutting it down completely?
I look forward to your response.
Kind regards,
BrianL

Hi Everyone,
I, too, have this problem. File access on the local network is just too slow. I have already rebooted the RN102 to check if it would help but to no avail. The difference between 6.4.0 and 6.4.1 on local network file access is very significant.
Does anyone have a solution to this aside from downgrading to 6.4.0?
Thanks,

Hi ntnsvh,
If the FAQ did not resolve the problem you are facing either, can you open a support case and let us know the case number?
If it is an online case please attach the logs zip file to it.

Yes, Brian, there was nothing unusual going on. We fully shutdown the NAS once and tried restarting several clients before falling back to 6.4.0. This immediately fixed the speed issue (but brought back the old bugs of course).
I'll wait for 6.4.2 before I try again. Meanwhile in 6.4.0 I can't get to the admin window (just the splash screen) after a backup runs (or perhaps its some other internal operation). But this has always been the case for us with 6.4.0 and several earlier releases.

JimG1 interesting, I have had same issue with the splash screen and using it remotely its a real pain, I hadn't known it was the backup causing this, but this now makes sense!
I also found changing the backup to NTFS it did it without errors whilst with fat32 had errors and had to restart a few times.

I just upgraded my RN104 to 6.4.1 and am experiencing similar speed issues. Starting Windows 10 File Explorer takes ages as the Quick Access links that are pointing to the NAS are loaded in (green progress bar is slow, to the point of taking somewhere in the range of 10 seconds). When copying a file to the NAS, if I browse to another folder on the NAS, the copying will stop (speed of 0 kB/s) while the files are slowly displayed, before the copying resumes again. When the copying is the only task, or even if I'm only streaming a video, that will be fine. But it seems to be any type of multiple access or multiple files, then the NAS near locks up.
I didn't encounter any of these issues with the 6.4.0 firmware. I noted in the 6.4.1 release notes that there was a fix for potential network buffer overrun issues. Could this be the cause?

Hi Brian,
Thank you for your response. I didn't see anything in the FAQ that seemed directly relevant. I upgraded 6.4.0 to 6.4.1, which seems to be an acceptable upgrade path. I've actually downgraded back to 6.4.0 and am very happy again. The only issue I see is that the system doesn't shutdown properly; gets stuck at a message, something like "Shutting down... Goodbye."
I think I'll only be upgrading to the next firmware if there's a note that the issue I was seeing with 6.4.1 is addressed.
Regards,
JG24

Even my RN104 slowed down after upgrade to 6.4.1 yesterday. Please fix it ASAP. We need the data. It worked fine with 6.4.0 before.

I too am having the exact same issues. I upgraded the firmware to 6.4.1 and now it takes several minutes to open or save a simple file. I am also getting read only errors when trying to reopen files.
I will try downgrading. Please fix Netgear.

Try disabling the anti virus, and see if this is the problem?
downgrading worked fine for me, works like a dream now apart from the original issues!

Exact same issue here on RN516 with 6.4.1 - downgrading now

Downgrading to 6.4.0 fixed my issue, please resolve in 6.4.2

I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 4 running OS 6.4.1. I know you guys don't approve of or support using OS6 software on the old systems; however, I wanted to let you know that turning off Anti-Virus also instantly fixed my unusably slow performance problem.

Thanks to StepenB!! I have downgraded to FirmWare 6.4.0, and things are back to normal. I learn a few hard lessons from Netgear. This is not the first time the system go to pots after firmware upgrade. I will be very carefull from this point on.
I've also experienced the same problems as described here after I upgraded to firmware 6.4.1. Shared files/folders were very slow over local network. I have only two "apps" installed: Anti-Virus plus and bit torent sync.
The problem dissappeared when the data-folder(s) was excluded from the Anti-virus "live scan". It is still slow on folders that have Live-Scan enabeld.
As a (possible) workaround I've scheduled full anti-virus scan at night when the NAS is not in use.
Alright folks, we have now a large amount of people that successsfully removed the problem by turning the anti-virus off. However, this is obviously just a temporarily solution. Does anyone know if Netgear is working on a fix?
- amtrakuk1AspirantTrue. I did pop on to see if there was any news and nothing, it's been 2 nearly 3 weeks since the issue was first reported.

I can also confirm other reports of slow transfer speeds even with AntiVirus disabled. Using Goodsync, I previously saw nearly 100MB/s transfer rates on backups (using jumbo frames) on prior firmware versions. After upgrading the firmware to OS 6.4.1, I get averages between 15 MB/s and 40 MB/s.

My ReadyNAS 102 has also slowed down so much it is not really usable. I will see if disabling the AV helps, as other posts suggest, and failing that, I will revert to 6.4.0.
10 mins later - Disabling the AV did the trick and it is now running at its normal speed.

Nevermind. I'm an idiot. I turned off jumbo frames on my desktop NIC while troubleshooting the slow firmware issues and forgot to turn it back on. With jumbo frames turned on, I'm back up to 90-100MB/s transfer speeds.
Yes sir.
is there a manual how to downgrade?
adri.

As a (previously) satisfied ReadyNAS user who has wasted several hours waiting for "hanging" files after an upgrade 6.4.0 to 6.4.1 last night on NAS 401, thankyou to those who contributed to this thread and the helpful instructions. Downgrade back to 6.4.0 fixed the problem -- comments about using 6.4.1 and disabling the AV noted, but a functional solution is the key for me.

6.4.2 Beta 1 is available which is another option. This has some bug fixes in it and we would appreciate feedback on this release in the beta forum.
